In the 1970s, Montañita was a small fishing village. The beach was deserted, the waves rolled in with no one on them and there were only a few hippies who came to live, love and take advantage of this secret paradise.

Today, the deserted beach is one of the most popular destinations in the country.

This is because, despite the people, Montañita is still a paradise that you must visit, especially if you are a fan of surfing.

The Best of Montañita:

  • The locals are friendly.
  • You don’t need a wetsuit!
  • There are waves all year round.
  • The party never stops, it’s the perfect place to party and socialize.

Montañita’s (flip-)flops:

  • The party never stops. The center of the village is noisy.
  • The streets are not always clean.
  • It is touristy and the village has lost some of its authenticity.

Montañita Ecuador Surfing: Where to go?

The Montañita, Ecuador surfing spot is divided into two parts.

At one end of the beach is “La Punta”, a point break of long straight lines which run smoothly. The waves can measure up to 3 meters and they can barrel at low tide (watch out for the rocks at the bottom of the water).
The spot can get crowded quickly. However, if you skip the wild Montañita evenings, you will be able to surf at first light, with only a few people in the water.

Otherwise you can surf between noon and 3:00 p.m. when there are generally fewer people. Protect yourself from the sun if you do this! Put on sunscreen, surf in lycra, and even wear a cap. Remember that you are in Ecuador and therefore, you are closer to the sun. It’s no coincidence that locals call this time slot “cancer hours”.

Key facts about La Punta spot:

  • The best time to surf: all year round!
  • The best swell: North West
  • The best tide: Medium to low tide
  • Wave type: Straight
  • Wave size: Up to 3 m
  • Crowds?: more than 25 surfers
